10 BOLD IDEAS FOR CANADA

LAND BACK

Indigenous Nations across Turtle Island have been forcibly displaced and disconnected from their traditional lands by the Canadian state. Crown lands need to be returned and Indigenous jurisdiction needs to be restored to Indigenous Nations.

STAND UP FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Canada must take a bold stance for human rights, both domestically and abroad. We should not be afraid to call out injustices, including those committed by our allies. Canada must also cease arms trading with countries who perpetuate human rights atrocities. We need to be an active participant in creating a more peaceful world.

CANCEL BILLIONAIRES

Canada’s top billionaires are $37 billion richer since the start of the pandemic, but they won't be paying their fair share for our country's recovery. An inheritance tax on estates over $5million, a 1% tax on wealth over $10 million and a 100% tax on wealth above $1 billion should be used to fund vital public services and improve the health of our communities.

(ACTUALLY) FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE

We have less than nine years to maintain a chance of limiting global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius. It's time for a Green New Deal. We need to set emissions reduction targets to at least 50% below 2005 levels by 2030, and zero emissions by 2050.

A ROADMAP TO CLOSE FOOD BANKS

Food banks are a means for governments to bypass the right to food in Canada by downloading the responsibility to charities. Instead of funnelling into food charity, we need a strategy to elevate Canadians out of poverty once and for all.

BUILD THE HOUSING WE NEED

In 1993 Canada cancelled all spending on new social housing. We now have 1.6 million households in core housing need. We need to build 160,000 units of affordable & green housing (coops, social housing and affordable rental) annually for the next ten years.

DEFUND THE RCMP

The RCMP was founded as a colonial and racist institution. Its annual budget is roughly $3.5 billion. The bulk of these funds should be reinvested in community-led alternatives to community policing and social services, like housing and mental health care for all.

LEGALIZE AND REGULATE DRUGS

To save lives and combat the illegal drug market we need to change our approach to this public health issue. Those who use drugs should not be punished. They should have access to the support if they need it.

PUBLIC SERVICES FOR EVERYONE

Millions of Canadians can’t afford the basics. It’s time for public ownership of telecom and pharma in this country. Canada should provide free transit and public education. Quality of life for Canadians should always be the bottom line.

STATUS FOR ALL

Most migrants arriving in Canada do not have full resident status, meaning they are denied full access to basic services like education and healthcare, despite paying for them through taxes.  All migrants need a pathway to permanent residency.
